Game Preview 12:Sonic the Hedgehog

Publisher: Sega
Platform available: PS3, Xbox 360
Release date: November 2006

Welcome back, Sonic! The distinctive blue color makes Sonic all the more recognizable. Sonic makes his much awaited next-gen debut in the conveniently named ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’. Expect what you expect in the other previous Sonic games. Lots of running, jumping and speeding, but with better visuals, of course. The environments are littered with collectible rings, power-ups, as well as the several robotic enemies that Sonic will face. As in the Wii version of the Sonic game (known as Sonic and the Secret Rings), the enemies can easily be disposed off by a homing attack. This is executed by jumping into the air, aiming in the direction of the enemy and by hitting the jump button again. Jump on foes to gain an advantage and this can set off a series of chain attacks, where you will just attack enemy after enemy without stopping. Unlike the Wii version of Sonic game, there is no pre-determined track. You are even free to roam the residential areas for a break! Besides that, alternative paths can be uncovered too – that is, if you have a keen eye. Look out for green orbs on some of the pillars, which can be knocked down with Sonic’s homing attack, revealing another path. A Sonic game is about speed, but yes, you are also able to ride with an eagle in one particular level! Sonic has the ability to run sideways on the walls too. Speed is good, but just be careful not to fall to your death. Besides playing as Sonic in the game, you can also play as Silver the Hedgehog.

Silver the Hedgehog does look very much like Sonic, but his abilities are quite different. Instead of using speed, Silver’s power is telekinesis, which is some kind of mind power. Silver’s levels do not involve as much speed and there will be a greater focus on platforming and puzzle-solving. With Silver telekinesis power, he can have to the ability to hover in the air for a period of time, allowing him to reach the more inaccessible areas. The power can be used to protect Silver against his foes too. Cars can be grabbed and thrown at the enemies. And yes, that power even allows Silver to halt bullets! Silver’s telekinesis power provides different alternative paths to victory, as compared to Sonic’s. This adds more variety into gameplay. Unfortunately, as much as you are excited by this game, details are still scarce at the moment, so just remember to check back next time.
